Moving to Burke Street

Our New Home on Burke St.!

Our New Home on Burke St.!

North Star is moving to a new home! We’re going to miss being in our first home at 704 Brookstown Ave; it has a lot of special memories to us all. But it has become clear that we need a location which is more visible and accessible to the local LGBTQ Community.

That is why we’re thrilled to announce that we’re moving to 930 Burke Street; within a block of Club Snap! This new home is going to put us ‘on the street’ of the local community. We’re envisioning the Alice Johnson Jennings Library up front right as you walk in, then you move into an area with comfy chairs and the TV where you can converse and relax with a group of friends. Move back into the work area where there is a long counter and you can gather and do homework, set-up for a potluck (we’re actually going to have a functioning kitchen sink! No more washing dishes in the bathroom!), or even have a meeting area. There is so much we can do with this space!

There is a LOT that we need to get done before we can open up at this location the week of June 15th. These are a couple of pics of what the new facility looks like inside now:

The new landlord is working on getting the walls prepped for painting and widening the restroom door and building a ramp for wheelchair access. As soon as that is done we will start painting our new home; we’re still deciding on colors! ¬†We all like the idea of light gray on the side walls but on the back wall and the divider wall Kevin says ‘fuschia’, George says ‘orange’, and Latoya says ‘green.’ The volunteers say paint the divider wall a rainbow flag… decisions, decisions. LOL!

That said we are going to need YOUR help to pull this move off smoothly. Here are some ways YOU can help North Star pull off this move:

  • We need boxes; especially boxes to help pack up the library!
  • We need volunteers with pick-up trucks or a box truck. (Or someone to donate moving services!)
  • Painting supplies and possible volunteers. (Gift cards to Lowes or Home Depot or a donation marked for those items work as well!)
  • We need volunteers to help us get everything set-up at the new location!
  • Of course, donations to help cover anything I haven’t mentioned!
  • We also have room for a full size fridge! If anyone has one they’d like to donate; please contact us!

We are also looking at purchasing new bookshelves and other shelving/storage units to put around the front window to house the Alice Johnson Jennings Library. We’ve seen some units at IKEA that would work great in this space. If you’d like to donate to the library for the new fixtures; please notate that on the donation.

We’re excited and hope you are as well! If you have any questions, would like to donate or help, please contact the center at or call 336-893-9053. You can also call George Dukes, board chair, at 336-403-7728.
