Our utmost priority is the safety of LGBTQ+ folks in the greater Triad region. As new information comes to light about COVID-19, including its growing known presence in our community, we are having to face hard realities.
North Star, like so many other organizations, are working to protect our community and fight the spread of COVID-19 to protect the most vulnerable among us.
In an abundance of caution, we have made the hard decision to close the North Star LGBTQ+ Community Center and suspend all North Star-sponsored activities from March 13, 2020 for the foreseeable future. We will continue to assess the situation and make decisions to protect our community.
The planning committees for our major events, such as Alt Prom and In Good Company, and our standing committees (Impact, Communications, Fundraising, and Youth Programs) will continue to meet in preparation for the re-opening of our doors. We are encouraging all members of committees to assess their own level of comfort and well-being before visiting our location. Please make choices that support your own safety and the health of those around you. Remote participation is always possible for these meetings. Outside organizations who use the Center will make their own decisions about suspending activities.
In the meantime, we will continue to provide support to the LGBTQ+ community. If you are experiencing an emergency, call 911. If you need help with LGBTQ+-related resources or have questions about our programs, we will continue to monitor our Facebook, Instagram, and emails.
We recognize North Star’s programs are an invaluable resource for the LGBTQ+ community in our area. We are working on ways to engage our community using technology. If you have recommendations, please let us know.
One final thing: North Star stands in uncompromising solidarity with Asian and Asian-American communities and we remain firm in our commitment to combating racism in all of its forms. Furthermore, we encourage individuals, organizations, and the many leaders in our midst to remember that we cannot tell someone’s vulnerability by looking at them. Please be kind and vocal in your networks about the many-layered impacts of this emerging health crisis.
Take good care, and we’ll see you soon,
The North Star Board
